Indianapolis, Indiana – A dangerous stretch of heat will grip western Indiana through Wednesday, with heat index values soaring to 105° and the potential for even hotter conditions on Thursday. Residents from Lafayette to Evansville are urged to take precautions as high humidity combines with 90s temperatures to create oppressive conditions across much of the state.
According to the National Weather Service Indianapolis, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for counties along the Illinois border, including Terre Haute, Vincennes, and Sullivan. Peak heat index readings will reach 105° on Wednesday, with a chance of values as high as 110° on Thursday. Overnight lows will struggle to drop below the mid-70s, providing little relief from the heat.
Local emergency agencies urge Hoosiers to limit outdoor activities, especially during the afternoon. Drink plenty of fluids, wear light clothing, and check on vulnerable neighbors, particularly the elderly and young children. Morning hours will offer the safest window for any strenuous activity, while the region’s cooling centers may open if conditions worsen.
This heat event is among the most intense so far this summer and could strain utilities as air conditioning demand spikes. High temperatures and dangerous heat index values could persist into the weekend, with additional advisories possible.
