Indianapolis, Indiana – A prolonged stretch of dangerously hot weather will grip central Indiana beginning Saturday afternoon, with heat index values climbing as high as 103° through Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a heat advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Tuesday, covering more than 50 counties including Marion, Tippecanoe, Bartholomew, and Knox. The advisory warns of health risks like heat exhaustion and stroke, particularly during peak afternoon hours.
Cities like Lafayette, Bloomington, and Muncie could see oppressive heat each day, while Indianapolis residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities between noon and 6 p.m. Health officials recommend wearing light clothing, staying hydrated, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and seniors.
High humidity will intensify the heat, making relief difficult without air conditioning. Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks and shift strenuous labor to early morning or evening hours when possible. Local cooling centers are expected to open across major cities, including Terre Haute and Anderson.
The advisory remains in effect until Tuesday evening, though further alerts could follow if temperatures remain elevated.
