Amity, Indiana – Water is rising quickly along Youngs Creek in Johnson County, and low-lying roads near Amity could flood within hours as the creek moves above flood stage early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Warning remains in effect from early this morning through late Friday afternoon for Youngs Creek at Amity. The creek measured 6.9 feet at 2:15 a.m., just below flood stage of 7.0 feet, and is forecast to crest near 7.3 feet later this morning before receding. Rainfall totals of up to 1.5 inches Thursday evening triggered the rapid rise.

At 7 feet, most low areas along the creek begin to flood, and approaches to the County Road 400 South bridge can take on water. Drivers in and around Amity should monitor conditions closely, especially near rural crossings and low-water access points.

Officials stress: turn around, don’t drown. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Never attempt to drive through water-covered roads.

Water levels are expected to fall below flood stage by late morning, but lingering high water could impact travel into the afternoon. Another update is scheduled by midafternoon.
