Fort Wayne, IN – Rising river levels have prompted extended flood warnings across northeastern Indiana and parts of northwestern Ohio, with the National Weather Service forecasting moderate flooding in several areas starting late Wednesday and continuing into next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, flood warnings remain in effect for the Saint Joseph River near Newville and the Fort Wayne area, as well as the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers. The agency predicts the Saint Joseph River will crest at 14.5 feet by Monday morning—well above its 12-foot flood stage—potentially flooding rural roads and agricultural land near DeKalb County Road 42, northeast of Newville.
Moderate flooding is also anticipated along the Maumee River at Fort Wayne and the Saint Marys River near Decatur, impacting parts of Allen and Adams counties in Indiana and Van Wert County in Ohio. The Auglaize River near Fort Jennings, meanwhile, is forecast to experience minor flooding.
Motorists are urged not to drive around barricades or through flooded roads, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Riverbanks may become unstable and dangerous, and residents living in low-lying or flood-prone areas should remain alert and consider precautionary measures.
Detailed river forecasts and the latest flood advisories are available through the National Weather Service at weather.gov/iwx.
The next flood statement is scheduled for release Thursday at 10:00 a.m. EDT.
