Evansville, Indiana – Over 3 inches of rain slammed the Evansville area in just 90 minutes Monday evening, overwhelming streets and triggering multiple water rescues across central Vanderburgh County.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a flash flood warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT for areas including Evansville, Melody Hill, and Kasson. Emergency management officials report that Highway 57 near the airport is flooded, and urban roadways throughout the metro are submerged, with some underpasses completely impassable.
Officials are calling this a particularly dangerous situation as thunderstorms continue to move through the region. Life-threatening flash flooding is affecting low-lying areas, creeks, and streams, and additional rainfall is likely to worsen the situation.
Drivers are urged to avoid all non-essential travel tonight and never attempt to cross flooded roads. Turn around, don’t drown. Those in flood-prone zones should move to higher ground immediately.
Heavy rain is expected to continue into the evening, with more alerts possible if conditions deteriorate.
