Cass County, IN – A massive field fire consumed over 20 acres in Cass County early Monday morning, forcing local fire departments to work together to contain the blaze.
Around 1 a.m., Cass County Fire District 1 and Royal Center Volunteer Fire Department responded to reports of a large fire in western Cass County. Additional support was requested from Logansport Professional Firefighters Local 470 and Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department to battle the flames. Fire officials determined the fire originated from an unattended trash burn.
According to the Cass County Emergency Management Agency, firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to a nearby garage and home. Although the fire is under control, the dry conditions and high winds have increased local fire risks. A burn ban remains in effect.
Forecasts predict some rain this week, but officials say it may not be enough to ease the area’s drought. Authorities issued citations related to the incident and urged residents to exercise caution with open flames.
The agency warns that dry fields and strong winds could spark additional fires, urging the public to remain vigilant.
