Indianapolis, IN – In a move that has raised concerns among fire service professionals, several National Fire Academy (NFA) training sessions scheduled in Indiana have been canceled. This development comes as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) undertakes a comprehensive evaluation of its programs and spending to ensure alignment with the priorities of President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to a notice sent to instructors, students, and fire departments, FEMA is in the process of evaluating agency programs and spending to ensure alignment with administration priorities.  As a result, all in-person training sessions offered by the NFA, both on and off campus, have been canceled effective immediately. The notice stated that courses capable of transitioning to a virtual format would do so, while those requiring in-person instruction would be reevaluated for rescheduling once the review is complete.

The canceled classes in Indiana include:

• Decision Making for Initial Company Officers – Jeffersonville, April 4-5, 2025

• Supervising Emergency Medical Services (SEMS) – New Haven, May 6-7, 2025

• Command and Control of Fire Department Operations at Target Hazards – Hamilton County, June 9-14, 2025

• Fire Investigations: Fire as a Weapon – MADE of Plainfield, June 21-22, 2025

The Indiana Fire & Public Safety Academy expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the cancellations, stating that the situation is beyond its control. There is currently no timeline for when or if these courses will be rescheduled.

The National Fire Academy (NFA), established in 1973, serves as the premier federal institution for training and educating fire and emergency services personnel across the United States. Its programs focus on enhancing professional development, leadership, and technical skills, ensuring that firefighters and emergency responders are well-prepared to handle a variety of incidents.
