La Porte, IN – A La Porte man was killed in a fatal crash early Thursday morning when the vehicle he was driving collided with a freightliner in Kankakee Township.
At 4:31 a.m. on April 3, 2025, deputies responded to the scene at the intersection of US Highway 20 and CR 300 East. Authorities discovered that the 2016 Kia operated by 44-year-old Cary C. Canary failed to stop at a stop sign, entering the path of a westbound 2016 Freightliner driven by 39-year-old Roman Nichols of Fremont, Indiana. Nichols was unable to avoid the collision, striking the Kia.
Emergency responders attempted to free the driver from the passenger vehicle but were unsuccessful. Canary was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, with toxicology tests pending. Deputies and additional responders from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, fire departments, and other agencies are assisting in the investigation. No further details are available at this time.
