Indianapolis, IN – Dangerous cold conditions are impacting much of central and west central Indiana this morning as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect, bringing life-threatening wind chills and hazardous outdoor conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the Extreme Cold Warning continues until 11 a.m. EST Sunday, with wind chills dropping as low as 23 below zero. A Cold Weather Advisory will remain in effect from 11 a.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. EST Monday, with wind chills still expected to reach 21 below zero.
The alerts cover a wide portion of the state, including Marion, Hamilton, Tippecanoe, Madison, Vigo, Hendricks, Boone, Howard, Clinton, Montgomery, Fountain, Carroll, Parke, Putnam, Clay, Vermillion, Tipton, Warren, and Shelby counties. Impacted cities include Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Lafayette, West Lafayette, Terre Haute, Anderson, Kokomo, Brownsburg, Plainfield, Danville, Crawfordsville, Frankfort, and Greencastle.
Meteorologists warn that exposed skin can develop frostbite in as little as 30 minutes, particularly during early morning hours. Prolonged exposure to the cold may also lead to hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.
Residents are urged to dress in multiple layers when going outdoors, including insulated coats, hats, gloves, and face coverings. Officials also advise using extra caution while traveling, as the extreme cold can impact vehicle reliability and increase the risk of weather-related emergencies.
The prolonged cold affects the Indianapolis metro area and surrounding regions of north central and west central Indiana, potentially impacting travel, outdoor work, and heating systems through Monday morning.
