Valparaiso, Ind. – Lake-effect snow is zeroing in on Porter County overnight, and drivers could encounter sudden whiteouts and slick pavement during the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon Monday for Porter County. Persistent lake-effect bands may drop 2 to 4 inches of additional snow, with locally higher amounts mainly east of State Road 49 and north of U.S. Route 30. Winds near the Lake Michigan shoreline could gust between 35 and 40 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow.
The most hazardous conditions are expected overnight into early Monday. Roads such as Interstate 94, U.S. 20 and U.S. 30 may become snow-covered in heavier bands, especially near Chesterton, Portage and Valparaiso. Visibility can change rapidly within a few miles as narrow bands shift.
Officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511in.org for updated travel conditions. Snow showers will gradually ease late Monday morning, but slick spots may linger into midday.
