Porter County, Ind. – Swimmers along the Indiana shoreline of Lake Michigan are being urged to stay out of the water as high waves and dangerous currents grip the region through Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, waves of 3 to 6 feet are expected along Porter County beaches, creating life-threatening swimming conditions, particularly for inexperienced swimmers. Nearby Lake County, including Hammond and Whiting, faces slightly lower but still dangerous waves of 3 to 5 feet through Monday night.

Officials warn that piers, jetties, and breakwalls will be especially hazardous as waves crash over shoreline structures. Beachgoers are advised to remain on dry land and avoid venturing near the waterline until conditions improve.

The alert covers popular destinations including Indiana Dunes National Park and Porter Beach, where strong rip currents could quickly pull swimmers offshore. Emergency crews stress that even strong swimmers are at risk in these conditions.

The Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for Lake County until Monday evening and for Porter County until Tuesday evening. Further advisories may be issued if dangerous currents persist.
