East Chicago, IN – A startling discovery was made near the railroad tracks at 149th Place and Parrish Avenue in East Chicago, Indiana, on Sunday, February 4, 2024.

Around 5:00 p.m., East Chicago Police Department officers responded to a report of possible human remains found in the area. An individual walking near the tracks alerted the authorities after spotting what seemed to be a human skull in a grassy area adjacent to the tracks.

According to the East Chicago Police Department, upon the officers’ arrival and investigation at the scene, they indeed observed a human skull. They promptly notified the Lake County Coroner’s Office and the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force. A subsequent search led to the discovery of the bottom jaw of the skull.

On the following day, Monday, February 5, the Homicide Task Force returned to the scene for a more detailed investigation. Utilizing a drone and a cadaver K9, detectives were able to recover a jacket and part of a vertebrae.

The Coroner’s Office is currently working to identify the remains. Preliminary observations suggest that the remains might have been at the location for an extended period. Further investigations will provide a more accurate timeline and establish the cause of death. As of now, no additional information has been released regarding this discovery.
