Indianapolis, IN – Holiday cheer is in full swing, but Indiana drivers are reminded not to decorate their cars with Christmas lights. Authorities warn it’s not only illegal but can also create hazardous distractions.
According to the Indiana State Police, Indiana Code 9-21-7-10 prohibits colored lights on vehicles outside of designated emergency vehicles. Violators risk fines and potential legal consequences. This law ensures road safety by preventing unnecessary distractions for other drivers.
Police have reported seeing an uptick in festive vehicle decorations, mirroring trends in nearby states like Illinois. While colorful displays might spread holiday cheer, the law allows only white or amber lights visible from the front of a car.
Indiana drivers are encouraged to celebrate responsibly and find safer ways to show their holiday spirit.
