Michigan City, IN – Franciscan Health’s Prenatal Assistance Program has received a major boost in its effort to fight diaper insecurity with the donation of nearly 250,000 diapers.
According to Franciscan Health, the National Diaper Bank Network, in partnership with Huggies, contributed 247,968 diapers to stock Franciscan’s Diaper Pantries. The organization partners with health providers, community programs, donors and sponsors nationwide to reduce diaper need and period poverty.
“This incredible gift from the National Diaper Bank Network and Huggies helps us extend our reach and ensure that more children in Northwest Indiana have the essentials they need to thrive,” said Tristan Kirby, Franciscan Alliance community health prenatal care program director. “We are deeply grateful for their generosity, which strengthens our ministry and brings hope to families facing diaper insecurity.”
The National Diaper Bank Network reports that nearly half of families struggle to afford diapers, which can cost close to $1,000 annually. As many as one in four families with diaper insecurity have reportedly missed school or work because they lacked the supplies needed for childcare.
Health experts warn that inadequate diaper supplies can lead to painful rashes, urinary tract infections and more frequent doctor visits for babies.
Franciscan’s Diaper Pantry program provides free diapers, wipes and other essentials to eligible families. Those seeking assistance can call 1-877-773-6285 to check eligibility, register and schedule an appointment.
Community members wishing to support the program can make donations through the Franciscan Health Foundation’s Prenatal Assistance Program by selecting “Prenatal Assistance Program – Northern Indiana” online or by calling (219) 661-3401.
