West Baden Springs, IN – Orange County Deputy Sheriff Zachery Andry, 30, remains in critical but stable condition at the University of Louisville Hospital after being shot four times during a traffic stop on January 3.
According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Andry was struck in the forehead, neck, shoulder, and bullet-resistant vest after stopping a vehicle on U.S. 150 and State Road 56. The vehicle, containing two occupants, fled the scene. A statewide Blue Alert was issued—the first in Indiana’s history—lasting 42 hours before being canceled on January 4.
The primary suspect, Austin Dakota Schepers, 33, of Jasper, abandoned the vehicle near Orangeville before allegedly forcing a woman at gunpoint to drive him to New Albany. Law enforcement, including Louisville Metro Police and the U.S. Marshals Service, located Schepers in a Louisville backyard on January 4, where he was fatally shot during a confrontation.
Two women, Devan A. Owens, 38, and Victoria E. Howard, 35, face charges for assisting a criminal. Owens is held on a $200,000 bond, with a trial scheduled for June 3. Howard faces additional charges and awaits trial in May.
A fund for Andry’s family has been established at Springs Valley Bank and Trust, with donations also accepted through the Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation.
