Indianapolis, Ind. – Thick fog blanketed much of central Indiana early Thursday, creating dangerous driving conditions and prompting a Dense Fog Advisory until 9 a.m. EDT.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, visibility has dropped below one mile across more than 20 counties, including Marion, Tippecanoe, Delaware, and Vigo. The advisory, issued at 1:30 a.m., warns that the fog could impact the morning commute in cities like Lafayette, Muncie, and Terre Haute.

Travelers along I-65, I-70, and U.S. 231 are urged to reduce speed, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra distance between vehicles. Emergency management officials advise avoiding unnecessary travel until mid-morning, when conditions are expected to gradually improve.

This type of widespread early summer fog is uncommon but not unprecedented in Indiana, typically forming when humid air meets cooler ground overnight. Similar conditions caused multi-vehicle pileups in 2022 near Lebanon and Anderson.

Drivers should stay alert for rapid visibility changes and allow extra travel time. Updates from INDOT and NWS will follow if conditions worsen or extend beyond the advisory period.
