Indianapolis, IN – Indiana deer hunters are urged to prioritize safety as the deer reduction zone hunting season is underway, and the statewide archery season began on October 1. Conservation Officers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources remind hunters to stay cautious, especially when hunting from elevated positions.
More than 300,000 hunters are expected to participate across various hunting seasons, which continue through January 31, 2025. The most common accidents during the season result from falls while using tree stands and elevated platforms. Hunters are encouraged to follow critical safety protocols to avoid injury.
Hunters should inspect their tree stands and equipment before use, looking for signs of wear, fatigue, or damage. It’s essential to use full-body safety harnesses and tree stand ropes to secure oneself properly. During the hunt, keeping three points of contact while climbing and descending is critical for maintaining balance.
According to Indiana Conservation Officers, carrying a cellphone, flashlight, and notifying someone of your hunting plans can improve safety. They also stress knowing your target before shooting and what lies beyond it.
