La Porte County, IN – Two men were arrested after a Jeep overturned in a field and authorities discovered both drivers allegedly impaired during the incident late Sunday.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Balenia responded to a reported single-vehicle crash near CR 1000 South and CR 125 East. When arriving, he spotted a Dodge pickup traveling west on CR 1000 South before it turned onto a dirt lane that led to the crash site.
At the scene, deputies found a Jeep Wrangler on its side with the roof completely detached. The Dodge pickup seen earlier was also present. Authorities say both drivers – identified as Shawn D. O’Brien, the Jeep’s driver, and Broc A. Jurkowski, who was driving the Dodge – appeared impaired and were taken into custody.
O’Brien faces preliminary charges including operating while intoxicated (OWI) with a passenger under 18, a Level 6 felony, as well as misdemeanor OWI endangerment. Jurkowski was arrested on misdemeanor OWI and misdemeanor OWI endangerment.
The sheriff’s office reminded the public in its report that “arrests and criminal charges are mere accusations,” emphasizing that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
The department also issued a warning to the community, urging drivers not to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
