South Bend, IN – A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged after allegedly crashing into a South Bend Police Department patrol vehicle late Wednesday night.

According to the South Bend Police Department, Officer DeVonte Spratt was turning northbound onto Olive Street around 11:50 p.m. when his vehicle was struck head-on by a southbound car that had reportedly crossed the center line near Tucker Drive. The car, driven by Jesus Briano, collided with Spratt’s patrol vehicle, deploying airbags in both vehicles.

Police said Officer Spratt sustained a hand injury and was evaluated, while Briano suffered minor injuries but refused medical treatment. Officers reported that Briano smelled of alcohol, appeared unsteady, and slurred his speech. He declined sobriety tests but was transported to a hospital for medical clearance and a blood draw.

Authorities said Briano was later booked into the St. Joseph County Jail. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has charged him with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person and Minor Consuming Alcohol.

Police shared in-car video from the crash and a booking photo of Briano in response to community inquiries.

The South Bend Police Department reminded the public that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
