Indianapolis, Indiana – A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 AM to 11 AM EST Monday across much of Indiana, with dangerously low wind chills expected during the early morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, wind chills may fall to as low as 16 degrees below zero as arctic air moves across the region. The advisory covers central, north central, east central, west central, and southwest Indiana, impacting a large portion of the state.
Counties included in the advisory range from Tippecanoe, Carroll, Warren, and Clinton in the north to Vigo, Knox, Greene, Sullivan, and Clay in the southwest, and east through Madison, Delaware, Randolph, Henry, and Hancock counties. Cities within the advisory area include Indianapolis, Lafayette, West Lafayette, Kokomo, Carmel, Noblesville, Fishers, Muncie, Anderson, Terre Haute, Vincennes, Greenwood, Plainfield, Brownsburg, and Martinsville.
The National Weather Service warns that exposure to these wind chills could result in hypothermia or frostbite if proper precautions are not taken. The risk is highest during the pre-dawn and early morning hours, particularly for outdoor workers, early commuters, and anyone spending extended time outside.
Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, wear insulated layers including hats and gloves, and keep pets indoors when possible. Officials also encourage checking on older family members and neighbors and using portable heaters safely. Generators and grills should never be used indoors.
Wind chills are expected to gradually improve after late Monday morning as temperatures begin to recover.
