Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana residents are being urged to take immediate precautions as a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through 10 a.m. Monday, with dangerously low wind chills expected overnight and into the early morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, temperatures are forecast to fall between 2 and 7 degrees above zero overnight, while increasing winds will drive wind chill values down to between 10 and 19 degrees below zero by early Monday. The advisory applies to all of central Indiana, including Indianapolis and surrounding communities.

Forecasters warn that exposure to these conditions can be dangerous. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes when wind chills reach these levels. The coldest conditions are expected during the pre-dawn hours Monday morning.

The National Weather Service recommends wearing multiple layers, including hats and gloves, when outdoors or traveling. Residents are also encouraged to bring pets indoors, check on elderly neighbors, and ensure adequate heating in homes.

Drivers should prepare for the extreme cold by keeping emergency supplies in vehicles, such as blankets, extra clothing, and a charged phone, in case of delays or breakdowns. Homeowners are advised to protect pipes from freezing by allowing faucets to drip and opening cabinet doors where plumbing is located.

The advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Monday, after which temperatures are expected to gradually improve, though cold conditions may linger through the day.

Officials stress that now is the time to take action to avoid cold-related injuries or damage.
