La Porte, Indiana – Life-threatening waves and rip currents are expected to batter southeast Lake Michigan beaches tonight, with La Porte County, Indiana, under a High Swim Risk until Thursday morning. Waves are forecast to build to 3 to 5 feet, and officials are urging beachgoers to stay off piers and out of the water.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, Berrien County, Michigan will also experience dangerous conditions, with 2 to 3 foot waves prompting a Moderate Swim Risk. Wind gusts up to 30 mph out of the north are expected to drive hazardous structural and rip currents across the region.
The swim hazard is highest at Indiana beaches like Washington Park in Michigan City, where surf conditions will be roughest overnight. In Michigan, beaches such as Silver Beach in St. Joseph may see fewer waves but still pose real danger for swimmers, especially near piers.
Officials advise avoiding all water entry, heeding warnings from lifeguards, and refraining from walking on piers or breakwalls. These conditions can be deadly, especially after dark when visibility is reduced.
Warnings remain in effect through Thursday morning. Additional beach hazard statements could be issued if conditions persist or worsen.
