Michigan City, Indiana – Dangerous waves and strong rip currents are making Lake Michigan’s Indiana shoreline a no-go zone for swimmers and beachgoers through Thursday morning. Waves could climb as high as 5 feet overnight, threatening anyone in the water and creating a serious risk for those walking on piers.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for Northern La Porte County until at least 10 a.m. Thursday. Forecasters warn that structural and rip currents will be at their strongest overnight, making swimming hazardous and increasing the odds of being pulled into deeper water.

Northern La Porte communities, including Michigan City and Long Beach, should stay off the sand and away from piers, especially after dark. Local authorities are urging everyone to avoid entering the water until conditions calm and to heed posted warnings. Recent summers have seen similar events lead to rescues and close calls along this stretch of shoreline.

Residents and visitors should monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local agencies. Stay off the piers, avoid swimming, and supervise children near the water’s edge. This advisory is expected to expire Thursday morning, but additional warnings may be issued if hazardous conditions continue.
