Indianapolis, IN – A 22-year-old Indianapolis man was arrested this week for allegedly fleeing the scene of a violent hit-and-run that killed a young child and seriously injured two adults.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), Danny Wimbleduff was taken into custody Tuesday by detectives with the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit. The arrest follows a crash that occurred Wednesday night near South State Avenue and East Raymond Street.
IMPD reports the crash happened just after 9:00 p.m., involving two vehicles and a bicyclist pulling a bike trailer. When first responders arrived, they found a 4-year-old child, Alan Marcelo Salas-Garcia, deceased at the scene. Two adults — one female and one male — were transported to local hospitals in critical condition.
Officers on scene learned the driver of a Dodge Charger had fled on foot. Despite assistance from K9 officers and drone units, police were initially unable to locate the suspect. Detectives later reviewed video footage and spoke with several witnesses before identifying Wimbleduff as the suspect.
Wimbleduff is facing preliminary charges of reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury. Final charging decisions will be made by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
“I am heartbroken by the loss of Alan Marcelo Salas-Garcia,” said IMPD Chief Chris Bailey. “My thoughts remain with the other two victims and their families, whose lives have also been forever changed.”
Authorities emphasized that all charges are accusations and Wimbleduff is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
