Louisville, KY – A large portion of southern Indiana and central Kentucky is under a tornado watch until 2 a.m. EDT Thursday, as storms are expected to develop and intensify overnight.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, Tornado Watch 102 was issued at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday and affects 10 Indiana counties and 31 Kentucky counties, including Jefferson, Clark, Hardin, Floyd, Bullitt and Washington counties.

The watch, which covers areas such as Louisville, Elizabethtown, New Albany and Bardstown, signals conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and large hail. Residents in the watch area are urged to monitor weather updates and be prepared to seek shelter if warnings are issued.

The risk of severe weather is heightened by a strong frontal boundary interacting with warm, moist air over the Ohio Valley. Forecasters are advising residents to have multiple ways to receive alerts and avoid unnecessary travel overnight.

Emergency officials recommend moving to interior rooms on the lowest level of sturdy buildings if a warning is issued. Mobile homes and vehicles are considered unsafe during tornado conditions.

The tornado watch is set to expire at 2 a.m. Thursday, but the threat of storms may linger into the early morning hours. Stay tuned to local media and official weather sources for real-time updates and safety information.
