Chicago, IL – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for large portions of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, including Chicago, due to dangerous fire conditions. The warning remains in effect until midnight CDT Friday, as strong winds and low humidity create an increased risk of fast-spreading wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service, the affected areas include Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Ogle, Lee, De Kalb, Kane, DuPage, La Salle, Kendall, Grundy, Will, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois, and Ford counties in Illinois. In Indiana, the warning covers Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and Benton counties.
South winds are expected to reach speeds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. Relative humidity levels will drop as low as 30 to 35 percent, creating conditions that could lead to extreme fire behavior. Authorities strongly discourage any outdoor burning, as fires could spread rapidly under these conditions.
Some areas near Lake Michigan, including portions of Lake and Cook counties, may experience slightly higher humidity and lower temperatures due to an onshore wind component. However, inland areas will remain at high risk.
Residents are urged to take precautions, secure loose outdoor objects, and report any fires immediately. Emergency officials warn that even small sparks could ignite dangerous blazes. The Red Flag Warning will expire at midnight unless extended by weather officials.
