Indianapolis, Indiana – Poor air quality could dampen Independence Day plans for much of Central Indiana, with elevated pollution levels expected to pose health risks Friday.

According to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), an Air Quality Action Day is in effect for July 4 across Central, East Central, and West Central Indiana. Fine particle pollution (PM2.5) is forecast to reach levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions.

Cities impacted include Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Muncie, and Kokomo. Residents in these areas are advised to reduce prolonged outdoor activity, especially during afternoon and evening hours when pollution tends to peak. IDEM recommends carpooling, avoiding gas-powered yard equipment, and postponing open burning to reduce emissions.

Friday’s action day coincides with increased fireworks and vehicle traffic, which can spike particulate pollution. Similar AQADs were issued during past July 4 holidays, often resulting in hazy skies and reduced visibility across the region.

The air quality alert remains in effect through midnight Friday. Additional advisories are possible if stagnant weather continues into the weekend.
