Indianapolis, Indiana – Ozone levels across Indiana are expected to reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups beginning overnight Tuesday, prompting a statewide Air Quality Action Day through midnight Wednesday. Residents with respiratory issues, the elderly, and children are urged to limit outdoor activity as pollution levels rise during the heat of the day.
According to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, ground-level ozone is forecast to peak in areas stretching from Indianapolis and Muncie to southern Indiana cities like Jeffersonville and Corydon. A Code Orange Air Quality Alert is in effect for the Louisville Metro Area from 9 a.m. to midnight Wednesday, while alerts for central and eastern counties begin at midnight tonight.
Affected areas include Marion, Hamilton, Delaware, Monroe, Clark, Floyd, and Wayne Counties, among others. Officials recommend refueling vehicles after 7 p.m., avoiding gas-powered lawn equipment during the day, and conserving electricity to reduce emissions that contribute to ozone formation.
Residents should carpool, use public transit, and turn off engines when idling to help mitigate the air quality threat.
Air Quality Alerts may extend into Thursday if ozone levels remain high. Stay updated through IDEM’s SmogWatch site.
