Indianapolis, IN – A fire erupted Saturday night at the Colonel Donald W. Moreau, Sr. Veterans Community Center, displacing 51 residents and injuring three. Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) firefighters rescued 18 occupants from the building, and three residents required hospitalization with minor injuries.

Arriving firefighters encountered intense flames on the second floor. They quickly called a second alarm and established a 30-foot perimeter to protect against possible structural collapse. It took over three hours to bring the fire under control, and 39 residential units were completely destroyed.

All but five of the displaced residents have been accounted for as of Sunday. Emergency accommodations in local hotels are being arranged for those affected while the fire’s cause remains under investigation.

Numerous organizations, including the Red Cross, the Living Room Lounge, and the Salvation Army Canteen, assisted displaced residents and emergency responders on the scene. IndyGo provided buses for transport, while the Den Indy supplied water to the firefighters.
