Arlington Heights, IL – Police responded to South Middle School on Thursday after a student reported finding a spent shell cartridge. Authorities determined there was no credible threat to students, staff, or the community.

The Arlington Heights Police Department stated the incident was reported to school staff around 1:30 p.m. Officers arrived immediately and began an investigation. Police met with school administrators and provided extra security during dismissal to ensure safety.

Authorities believe the shell casing may be a byproduct of construction on school grounds. Investigators suggested it could be an expended powder-actuated cartridge, used in construction tools.

A police K9 unit will conduct a sweep of the building. These dogs are trained to detect scents linked to firearms and ammunition.

Police advised parents, staff, and students to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. Officers will maintain a visible presence at the school in the coming days to reassure the community.

While there is no active threat, police emphasized their commitment to student safety and ongoing vigilance.
