Phoenix, Ariz. – Multiple Flood Watches are now in effect for a large portion of south-central and southwest Arizona, extending into parts of southeast California, as deep tropical moisture surges northward late this week. The National Weather Service in Phoenix warns that heavy rainfall could cause flooding from Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening, depending on location.

The first watch begins Thursday afternoon through Friday evening for Yuma, La Paz, and Imperial counties, including Yuma, Parker, Quartzsite, Blythe, and El Centro, where rainfall up to 1 inch is possible with locally higher totals. The second watch, effective Friday afternoon through Saturday evening, covers the greater Phoenix area, the East Valley, Buckeye, Apache Junction, Gila Bend, and Queen Creek, along with northwest and west Pinal County.

According to the weather service, tropical moisture associated with a Pacific system will produce widespread showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall totals could reach 1 to 1.5 inches, leading to rises in washes, small creeks, and low-lying roads. Urban flooding is possible in Maricopa and Pinal counties, especially near underpasses and poorly drained streets.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid crossing flooded roadways, follow “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” safety guidance, and be prepared for possible Flood Warnings later this week. Travel and outdoor activities should be planned around periods of heavy rain and reduced visibility.

Rain chances will decrease late Saturday night, followed by clearing and cooler, drier conditions Sunday into early next week.
