Springfield, IL – Illinois youth deer hunters achieved a historic milestone this fall, setting a new statewide record for the annual Youth Deer Hunt season, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

During the 2025 youth season, held October 11–13, young hunters harvested a preliminary total of 4,714 deer, surpassing last year’s count of 4,097. Officials say the total marks an all-time record since the youth program began.

Top harvest totals came from the following counties:

  • Randolph – 259
  • Pike – 164
  • Adams – 155
  • Jefferson – 155
  • Marion – 135
  • Fayette – 122
  • Effingham – 118
  • Shelby – 100
  • Jasper – 97
  • Perry – 96

Youth hunters with an unfilled, valid permit can continue hunting during the upcoming firearm deer seasons, scheduled for Nov. 21–23 and Dec. 4–7, 2025. This is the first year those unfilled youth permits will remain valid for both segments of firearm season.
