Chicago, Illinois – Snow squalls may create sudden whiteout conditions on roads across Illinois and Wisconsin tonight into Friday.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, snow showers and snow squalls are expected to develop behind an arctic cold front and spread across the Upper Midwest. The risk zone includes much of Illinois and Wisconsin, where brief but intense snow bursts could rapidly change driving conditions.

Snow squalls are especially dangerous because they can produce heavy snowfall rates, gusty winds, and near-zero visibility with little warning. Roads that appear wet or clear may quickly become icy, particularly on interstates, rural highways, bridges, and overpasses.

Forecasters caution that conditions can deteriorate within minutes, increasing the risk of spinouts and multi-vehicle crashes. Even short-lived squalls may severely impact evening, overnight, and Friday commute travel.

Outside of snow squalls, strong winds are also expected, with gusts potentially reaching 40 to 50 mph across parts of Wisconsin and northern Illinois. These winds may further reduce visibility by blowing snow and could create hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles.

Drivers who encounter a snow squall are advised to slow down gradually, turn on headlights and hazard lights, and avoid sudden braking. Delaying travel is recommended when possible.

The snow squall threat continues through Friday night, with conditions improving after the cold front moves east.
