Chicago, IL – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for portions of Illinois and northwest Indiana, with freezing rain and drizzle expected to create hazardous travel conditions overnight.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory begins at 4 p.m. CST Wednesday for areas including La Salle, Kankakee, Grundy, and Livingston counties, and at 6 p.m. CST Wednesday for Kendall, Will, and Cook counties, as well as Lake and Porter counties in Indiana. The advisory remains in place until 6 a.m. CST Thursday.

Forecasters warn that ice accumulations of around one-tenth of an inch could make roads, bridges, and overpasses dangerously slick. Motorists should plan for slow travel and possible delays, especially during the evening and early morning hours. Power outages are also a concern due to ice buildup on power lines.

Officials advise drivers to reduce speeds, increase following distances, and check road conditions before heading out. Illinois road updates can be found at gettingaroundillinois.com, and Indiana conditions are available at 511in.org.

Temperatures are expected to remain near freezing overnight, with conditions improving by Thursday morning as precipitation moves out of the region.
