Chicago, IL – Freezing drizzle early this morning is creating slick travel conditions across parts of Illinois, especially along I-57. The National Weather Service reports a 20% chance of freezing precipitation, which could result in icy untreated surfaces before temperatures rise later in the day. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially in shaded areas and bridges, where ice tends to form more quickly.

According to the National Weather Service, the greatest risk of ice accumulation is expected before 10 a.m. near and east of I-57. A light glaze of ice may develop, causing slippery roadways and hazardous travel conditions. Drivers should monitor road conditions through Getting Around Illinois and delay non-essential travel until midday.

The weather is expected to improve later in the day, with temperatures climbing to 39°F and drizzle turning to light rain. Tuesday will bring mostly cloudy skies and a high near 40°F, while Christmas Day is forecast to remain cloudy with a 30% chance of afternoon rain. By Thursday, a warming trend will push highs into the mid-40s, with temperatures nearing 50°F on Friday.

Residents should remain alert to changing conditions, especially during morning commutes. While no hazardous weather is expected later this week, wet roads could continue to create challenges during the holiday rush.
