Springfield, IL – Illinois has been nationally recognized for a new technology project that alerts drivers to emergency vehicles and hazards, a move officials say will save lives and prevent roadside crashes.

According to the Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT), the state earned the 2025 Government Experience Project Award for its “Move Over Illinois! Real-time Emergency Alerts Mapping and Navigation” system. The initiative, launched in 2024 in partnership with Google and the Illinois State Police, integrates alerts into the Waze navigation app, warning drivers of crashes, hazards, and emergency responders on the road ahead.

“This recognition is a meaningful reminder that our efforts are making a real difference in the lives of first responders and those who share the road with them,” said DoIT Acting Secretary and State CIO Brandon Ragle.

Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly said the system helps reduce “Move Over” crashes by giving drivers more time to slow down and safely change lanes. “The advance warning gives people time to slow down and move over, reducing the risk of a crash for both drivers and our Troopers,” Kelly said.

The project highlights how technology can directly enhance public safety while promoting safer roads. In total, 41 governments nationwide were recognized this year for innovative digital services.
