Springfield, Ill. – Parts of Illinois could see damaging wind gusts over 60 mph and isolated flooding starting Saturday afternoon as a round of severe thunderstorms moves across the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the primary threat on Saturday will stretch from late morning through the afternoon, especially in central and west-central Illinois. The storm risk includes frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, wind damage, and locally heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas.
Cities such as Springfield, Decatur, and Peoria are under a Level 2 (Slight Risk) for severe weather Saturday, while areas farther south like Edwardsville and Carbondale fall under a Level 1 (Marginal Risk). By Sunday, the storm threat shifts eastward but remains active, especially from the afternoon through the evening across Champaign, Bloomington, and Danville.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and secure outdoor items ahead of the gusty winds. Power outages and downed tree limbs are possible. Officials recommend charging phones and having flashlights ready.
The severe weather threat may extend into early Sunday night. Updates will follow as new watches or warnings are issued.
