Peoria, Illinois – A sharp band of winter snowfall cut across central Illinois on Saturday, leaving behind hazardous travel conditions and notable accumulations along the I-74 corridor as drivers and road crews worked through the weekend cleanup.

Snow fell steadily for several hours Saturday, with the heaviest totals centered from Peoria east toward Bloomington-Normal. Official reports show 5.7 inches of snow in Peoria and 4.6 inches in Springfield, with localized amounts topping 6 to 8 inches near and just north of I-74. Areas south of I-70 generally saw lighter totals, though some reports there may be refined as additional observations come in.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the storm produced a narrow but intense snow band, leading to sharp gradients in snowfall totals over short distances. Volunteer observer and CoCoRaHS reports are still being compiled, and additional updates are expected as late reports are reviewed.

Road conditions deteriorated quickly Saturday afternoon and evening, especially along I-74, I-155, and U.S. 150, where snow-covered lanes and reduced visibility slowed traffic. Illinois State Police and IDOT crews worked overnight plowing and treating primary routes, but slick spots persisted into Sunday morning, particularly on secondary roads and untreated surfaces.

Air travel saw minor delays at regional airports, while weekend travelers were urged to slow down and allow extra time. According to IDOT, drivers should continue to use caution through Sunday as melting during the day refreezes overnight, creating patches of black ice.

With additional winter systems possible later this month, residents are encouraged to restock winter kits, keep vehicles fueled, and monitor updates closely. This storm serves as an early reminder that winter travel season is fully underway across Illinois.
