Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across parts of northern and central Illinois may face dangerous visibility conditions during the Wednesday morning commute as dense fog blankets the region, especially south of the Chicago metro area.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the heaviest fog is expected in the teal-shaded counties including Joliet, Ottawa, Pontiac, Kankakee, and Valparaiso. Visibility in these areas may drop below a quarter mile through 9 a.m. CDT. The fog is expected to begin lifting after sunrise but could linger in low-lying areas until late morning.

Major travel routes such as I-55, I-57, and I-80 may experience sharply reduced visibility, increasing the risk of collisions during peak commute hours. Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra following distance. Residents should also allow additional time for travel and avoid non-essential trips where possible.

While Chicago and Rockford are seeing lesser impacts, patchy fog may still develop around Elgin and DeKalb before dissipating. This is the second dense fog advisory in the area this month.

More updates are expected throughout the morning. Warnings remain in effect until 9 a.m. today.
