Chicago, Illinois – A surge of warm air will push temperatures into the upper 70s to near 80°F Tuesday before a cold front triggers strong thunderstorms that could disrupt the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, isolated storms may develop late Monday night into early Tuesday, mainly near and north of I-88, with some capable of producing hail up to 1 inch and gusty winds. The more significant round arrives Tuesday afternoon and evening, when storm coverage increases to 60–90% across northern Illinois.

The Chicago metro area, including Aurora, Naperville, and Joliet, sits in a zone where storms could produce damaging wind gusts near 60 mph along with large hail. Travel along I-90, I-94, and I-55 may become hazardous during peak commute hours due to heavy rain and reduced visibility.

By Wednesday, temperatures drop sharply into the upper 30s to upper 40s, especially near Lake Michigan, with blustery conditions replacing the early-week warmth. Rain may linger as cooler air settles into the region.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items and stay alert for warnings Tuesday afternoon into the evening. Additional advisories are likely as the cold front approaches.
