Springfield, IL – A wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing drizzle is expected to move across central Illinois overnight, bringing slick travel conditions into early Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, light snow will begin west of the Illinois River late Saturday evening, expanding eastward after midnight. Areas along and north of a Macomb-to-Danville line could see 1–2 inches of snow, while regions south of I-74 may experience a light glaze of ice as temperatures hover near freezing.

Forecasters say the main period of precipitation will occur between midnight and mid-morning Sunday, with the mix transitioning to rain as temperatures rise slightly above freezing. However, cold pavement will keep untreated roads slick, especially during the early morning commute.

Expected ice accumulation ranges from 0.01 to 0.03 inches, mainly between Springfield, Decatur, and Mattoon. The weather service warns that even small amounts of freezing drizzle can create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

Residents are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling overnight and early Sunday. Most precipitation should end by late morning as temperatures climb into the upper 30s.
