Springfield, IL – Cleanup and damage assessments continue across central Illinois after eight tornadoes tore through the region Sunday, with winds reaching up to 98 mph and paths stretching more than 13 miles.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storm surveys confirmed eight tornadoes across multiple counties, including Montgomery, Christian, Douglas, and Richland. The strongest tornado tracked from Nokomis to Pana, rated EF1 with peak winds of 95 mph and a path length of 13.6 miles. Another EF1 tornado near Tuscola to Villa Grove reached 98 mph and traveled 11.4 miles.
Additional tornadoes were confirmed near Assumption, Lovington, and Tuscola, all rated EF1 with winds between 90 and 95 mph. Weaker EF0 tornadoes, with winds between 75 and 85 mph, were identified near Bethany, Arthur, and Olney.
Communities including Pana, Taylorville, Sullivan, and Tuscola saw localized damage to buildings, trees, and power lines. Emergency crews continue to assess impacts, and residents are urged to use caution around debris and downed utility lines.
This latest round of severe weather highlights the start of the spring storm season across Illinois. More updates could follow as additional survey data is finalized and recovery efforts continue across the region.
