Rockford, IL – Snowfall across Illinois this morning is causing hazardous travel conditions, with temperatures expected to drop below zero. Roadways, especially near I-39, are becoming slick and snow-covered, making travel slow and dangerous for morning commuters.
According to the National Weather Service, peak snow rates of 0.5 inches per hour are expected between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. near I-39. In the Chicago metropolitan area, snowfall will intensify between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m., tapering off as a cold front sweeps through by late morning. Widespread untreated roads will freeze, with temperatures remaining in the teens throughout the day.
Wind chills are expected to fall between -10°F and -15°F by mid-morning, particularly dangerous for those exposed to the cold for extended periods. Residents are advised to bundle up in multiple layers, including hats and gloves, and limit outdoor activities. For drivers, extra travel time is crucial, and maintaining distance between vehicles is recommended to avoid accidents.
Looking ahead, Illinois will see improving conditions on Thursday, with partial sun and highs reaching the mid-20s. By Friday, temperatures may approach freezing, offering a brief respite from the current bitter cold. However, forecasters predict another storm system could bring additional snow by the weekend.
