Springfield, Illinois – Drivers across central Illinois could face sudden crosswinds and hazardous travel within hours as powerful wind gusts ramp up late this morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Wind Advisory is in effect through the evening, with sustained south winds of 20 to 30 mph and peak gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph. The strongest winds are expected from late morning into the mid-afternoon, impacting communities including Springfield, Bloomington, Decatur, and Champaign.
High-profile vehicles traveling along I-55, I-72, and I-74 may experience difficult handling, especially on open stretches. Loose outdoor items such as trash bins, patio furniture, and decorations could be blown around, while tree limbs may snap under stronger gusts.
Winds will gradually shift southwest and begin to ease later this evening, but not before creating scattered power outage risks across the region.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects now and use caution on roadways, particularly during peak wind hours this afternoon. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions intensify.
