Chicago, Illinois – Dangerous heat and oppressive humidity are making a return to Illinois this week, with peak heat indices soaring above 100 degrees through Wednesday and the potential for thunderstorms increasing midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, Monday and Tuesday will bring “very humid” conditions, with heat indices between 100–110°F—especially near Lake Michigan. The risk of storms rises Tuesday night into Wednesday, with possible downpours and gusty winds affecting the northern half of the state.

In Chicago, Naperville, and Waukegan, residents should limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours and stay hydrated. Dangerous swimming conditions are also expected along Lake Michigan starting Wednesday due to breezy onshore winds, making rip currents a serious threat through Thursday.

By Thursday, a cooler and less humid air mass will settle into the region, offering relief from the early-week swelter. However, beachgoers are urged to avoid Lake Michigan as hazardous waves and currents persist into the evening.

More heat advisories or storm warnings could be issued by Tuesday evening. Residents should monitor local alerts and avoid non-essential outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
