Chicago, Illinois – Damaging winds could disrupt travel across the Chicago metro late tonight through Friday morning, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph as a powerful storm system begins impacting northern Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the strongest winds will develop overnight and peak between the early morning hours and midday Friday, creating hazardous driving conditions on major roadways including Interstates 90, 94, 55, and 294. High-profile vehicles may struggle on exposed highways and bridges as crosswinds intensify.
Behind the windy conditions, temperatures Friday will remain cooler with highs between 43°F and 50°F. Winds will gradually ease later in the afternoon before quieter weather briefly returns Saturday.
The next major system arrives Sunday as rain spreads into northern Illinois with a chance of thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon and evening. Some storms could become strong as the system intensifies across the Midwest.
By Sunday night into Monday, a sharp cold front will sweep through the Chicago area. Rain may change to snow as temperatures drop into the 20s, with gusty winds potentially creating areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility during the Monday morning period.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items before the wind surge tonight and stay alert for rapidly changing weather conditions through early next week as multiple systems move across the region.
