Springfield, IL – Strong fall thunderstorms are expected to sweep across central Illinois Saturday afternoon and evening, bringing damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and a limited tornado risk. The National Weather Service in Lincoln warns that storms developing east of the Illinois River could produce gusts exceeding 60 mph and isolated flash flooding during the late-day hours.

According to the National Weather Service Lincoln office, thunderstorms will intensify during the afternoon as a cold front moves through the region. The greatest risk for damaging wind and brief spin-up tornadoes extends from Peoria and Lincoln east toward Bloomington, Champaign, and Decatur. Localized flooding may develop where downpours train over the same areas. Storms are expected to weaken as they shift southeast late Saturday night.

Forecasters urge residents to remain weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Strong wind gusts may down trees or power lines, leading to scattered outages and hazardous travel conditions. Drivers along I-55, I-72, and US-36 should prepare for sudden visibility drops and ponding on roads. Outdoor events or fall festivals may need to pause or move indoors as storms approach.

Emergency officials recommend securing patio furniture and light decorations, charging devices, and staying indoors when thunder roars. The risk of severe weather should subside early Sunday as cooler, drier air arrives behind the front.
