CHICAGO, Ill. – A sharp November chill is rolling toward the city as Chicago faces its first serious Winter Storm Watch of the season. Starting late Sunday and lasting through Monday afternoon, heavy lake-effect snow and wind gusts topping 35 mph could make travel hazardous across Cook County and surrounding suburbs.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, intense snow bands may develop after midnight Sunday, producing localized snowfall rates over two inches per hour. Totals exceeding six inches are possible near the Lake Michigan shoreline, especially from Evanston to Hyde Park. Strong northerly winds will whip snow sideways, slashing visibility for early commuters on I-90, I-94, and Lakeshore Drive.

Travel agencies and road crews are urging drivers to plan alternate routes, charge phones, and pack emergency kits. Untreated bridges and overpasses could ice up quickly under slushy accumulations. Metra and CTA riders may face reduced visibility and slippery platforms during the Monday rush, while flights at O’Hare and Midway could see delays as crews battle blowing snow.

The coming storm marks Chicago’s transition from late-fall dampness to early-winter bite. Temperatures will tumble from near 40°F on Sunday to the upper 20s by Monday afternoon. Wind chills could dip into the teens. Veterans Day looks calmer but cold, with highs around 43°F and sunshine returning briefly before another Arctic surge approaches midweek.
