Springfield, Illinois – Wildfire smoke is blanketing Illinois, triggering a statewide Air Quality Alert through midnight Friday, and residents with respiratory issues are being urged to stay indoors.

According to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, an Air Pollution Action Day is in effect for all counties in Illinois, from Adams to Vermilion, as fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke combines with stagnant weather conditions to create “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” (USG) air quality. In some regions, air quality may reach “Unhealthy” levels, posing risks even for healthy individuals.

Major cities including Springfield, Peoria, Decatur, Urbana, and Quincy are expected to see elevated ozone and particulate levels throughout Friday. Outdoor exertion should be limited—especially for children, older adults, and people with asthma or heart conditions. Schools and summer camps are advised to move activities indoors.

Residents can help reduce emissions by limiting vehicle trips, avoiding refueling during daylight hours, and postponing the use of gas-powered lawn equipment. Up-to-date conditions and tips are available at airnow.gov.

This marks one of the most extensive statewide air quality alerts this year, driven largely by wildfire smoke from the western U.S. and Canada. Alerts remain in effect until at least midnight Friday, with updates possible if smoke persists.
