Mount Vernon, IL – A round of wet, accumulating snow is expected this morning across parts of southern Illinois, where a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 AM to midnight, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Paducah.
The advisory covers Jefferson, Wayne, Edwards, and Wabash Counties, including the cities of Mount Vernon, Fairfield, Albion, and Mount Carmel. Forecasters expect up to 2 inches of wet snow, with the greatest impacts likely during the morning hours as temperatures hover near freezing.
Because the snow will be wet and heavy, even modest accumulations can create slick spots, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces. Drivers should prepare for reduced traction and slower travel during the morning commute.
Snow is expected to taper through the afternoon and evening, but roads may remain damp or slushy in spots. Temperatures this evening may cause refreezing on some surfaces, especially in shaded or rural areas.
NWS recommends motorists slow down, leave extra following distance, and allow additional time to reach their destination. Travelers can check the latest road conditions using the link provided by NWS Paducah at weather.gov/pah/roads.
Residents are encouraged to monitor changing conditions throughout the day and share any snowfall reports or travel issues with local officials or NWS.
